The origins and history of the nursery

Competence, commitment, and professionalism are values that have been passed down from grandfather to father, and from father to son. Alessandro Mannone expanded the technological and automation aspects of the business to make it competitive on the Italian and foreign markets. Today, Giacomo had the intuition to close the wine production chain by bottling the precious wines and enriching the family history, adding a new piece to their already rich history.

  • Company origins

Our vine nursery production began in 1895 with Mr. Michele, my grandfather's grandfather, who, together with his son Giuseppe, produced vine cuttings for the family's needs as landowners and winegrowers. Any surplus production was then sold. Later, my grandfather Giacomo and my father Alessandro took over. They strongly believed in the potential of this sector and began to invest time and money passionately in the company we know today. Today, we are in the fifth generation, consisting of myself and my brother Giorgio.

  • What we do

Our production consists mainly of certified and standard grafted vine shoots, but we also have a marginal production of American vine shoots and large vine shoots.

  • Markets

What we produce is destined for the whole of Sicily, Sardinia, Puglia, Veneto, Friuli, and finally Malta.

  • Collaborations

We have been collaborating for years with the Sicilian Regional Government Nursery on the propagation of virus-free and genetically controlled material. We also collaborate with the University of Palermo, the CNR (National Research Council) in Palermo, and the DOC Sicilia Consortium on various projects, some of which are aimed at studying Sicilian viticultural biodiversity.

  • Looking ahead

The study of biodiversity is essential if we want to look to the future, given that our Sicily is now increasingly subject to climate change. Therefore, studying certain varieties, clones, or biotypes that could have good characteristics for tackling this issue is more useful than ever. One of our goals is to close the wine production chain, from the vine shoot to the bottle of wine.
